A team of researchers including clinicians and scientists have made an important step forward in search of the mechanisms underlying increased risk of coronary artery disease in men who carry a particular type of the Y chromosome (haplogroup I).

Average densities of Haplogoup I are to be found in Moldavia 48%, Romania 25%, Macedonia 34%, Bulgaria 28%, Albania 25%, Hungary 11%, Lapland 28%, Netherlands 25%, England 20%, Poland 18-20% and Muslim Kurds in Turkey 16.8%.

The greatest density of Haplogoup I occur in Bosnia and Herzegovina 65%. Other higher than average densities occur in the Caucasus: Darginians of Dagestan 58% and Abkhazians 33%, Croatia (mainland 38%, Hvar 66%, Korčula 54%), Serbia (Serbs 38,5%), 23.6% of German males carry the haplogroup I mutation, (highest frequency in Northern Germany 37.5%), Norway 40%, Sardinia 37%, (42%), Sweden (North 26%, Gotland & Värmland 50%), Denmark 39%, Montenegro 38%, (36%), Iceland 33%, and West Finland 41%, though the figure drops in East Finland to 20%.
